THE HERMITAGE IN LENINGRAD owns 35 paintings by the 17th-century Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). He became known beyond the borders of Holland even during his lifetime. A subtle landscape and animal painter, Wouwerman created entertaining compositions on a variety of subjects, including cavalcades, hunting scenes, battle and genre paintings. Wouwerman's, exquisite colour range and minute brushwork made him very popular in France, Russia, England, Germany and other European countries.
